Embracing Mortality: The Importance of Acknowledging Death

To start this blog, I want you to take out a piece of paper and draw a line across the width of it. To the left of the line, write “birth” and to the right of the line, write “death.” Then, draw a dot on the line in terms of where you believe you lie currently on this life timeline. Now, close your eyes, and take a few minutes to meditate on this. What comes to your mind? Thoughts? Feelings? Desires? Regrets?

In our society, we typically try not to talk or think about death. We use euphemisms such as “passed away” or “no longer with us” to avoid even having to say the word death. The idea of death can bring up a lot of uncomfortable emotions for people. There are some scholars who believe that all humans experience death anxiety, regardless of whether it is conscious. Just like any anxiety, the best way to reduce it is to confront it. Avoiding it will only reinforce the anxiety. As such, acknowledging death is crucial for leading a fulfilling life. Below are some benefits of actually confronting our mortality.

Living More Mindfully

Death is the one certainty in life, a shared destiny that binds all humans together. Accepting this inevitability encourages us to live more consciously. When we acknowledge that our time is limited, we are more likely to prioritize what truly matters, whether it is nurturing relationships, pursuing passions, or contributing meaningfully to society. This awareness fosters a sense of urgency and appreciation for every moment. We can live more gratefully, aware that we are able to experience the miracle of life for only a certain period of time and that we should make the most of it.

Encouraging Authenticity and Courage

Knowing that life is finite pushes us to live authentically, embracing our true selves without fear of judgment. It encourages individuals to take risks, pursue dreams, and engage in meaningful experiences without hesitation.

Emotional Preparation

Confronting the reality of death can be emotionally trying, yet it prepares us for inevitable losses and thus helps us cope with grief more resiliently. Resisting the idea that ourselves or loved ones can die will likely make it more difficult to process when it happens. Acknowledging death allows us to process and express our emotions rather than suppressing them, which leads to greater healing. By understanding the cycle of life, we can find beauty in the transient and develop healthier perspectives on life and loss, which in turn, strengthens our emotional well-being.

Cultivating Empathy and Connection

Recognizing our shared mortality fosters empathy and connection among individuals. It reminds us of our shared humanity, encouraging compassion and understanding across different backgrounds and beliefs. This can lead us to treat others with kindness and respect, knowing that everyone faces the same fate.

Better End-of-Life Decisions

Discussing death openly encourages better end-of-life planning, ensuring individuals' wishes are honored. Dr. Atul Gawande wrote a great book about this called Being Mortal, in which he discusses the importance of having open and honest conversations about death to help family and friends navigate the end of their life. This openness can alleviate the burden on families during difficult times by reducing uncertainty. By considering our mortality, individuals can make informed decisions about healthcare, estate planning, and how they want to live their last days. This can ensure their values and desires are respected.

Conclusion

Acknowledging death is not morbid. Instead, it is the recognition of something inevitable and natural. This recognition allows us to embrace life with a fuller, more profound understanding. It encourages us to live with intention, prioritize meaningful experiences, and develop deeper connections with others. By accepting our mortality, we unlock the potential to live more authentically and courageously.
