Counseling can be a difficult step for anyone to take but can be especially hard for some men. At Sunrise Counseling, we understand, and we are on your team. If you are looking for new tools to address life differently, we would be happy to talk to you.

Here are some common issues we help with at Sunrise Counseling.

Stress

The demands of life can cause men to feel stressed, overwhelmed or pressured. Although we all experience these emotions at times, feeling stressed for an extended period can result in changes in daily functioning. Sleep difficulties may emerge, and muscle tension or headaches can develop. You may find that you are more irritable than normal or find that you have difficulty breathing at times. Stress can also impact relationships at work or in one’s personal life. If you are feeling overwhelmed, therapy may benefit you by helping you to develop new ways to deal with the stressors in your life.

Depression

Are you depressed and not aware of it? This is the case for many men in our country. Men who are under stress for prolonged periods of time are at risk for developing depression. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health has found that approximately 6 million American men experience depression every year. Depression in men has shown to look different than what we typically think of how depression looks.

Depression in men may present itself as fatigue, irritably or anger, lack of motivation, loss of interest in things that one used to enjoy, and sleep difficulties. Since men sometimes experience these symptoms without the typical sadness that we think of, depression in men can be easily be overlooked. Men may cope with depression by overworking or by using alcohol or drugs. These coping skills may bring about short-term relief but are not effective in alleviating the depression long term. Therapy is a place where men can learn new strategies to attack the depressive symptoms they are experiencing.

Mid-life crisis

For some men, a sense of uncertainty can creep in during their 30s or 40s. They have spent the early part of their life working towards being successful. Meeting one’s goals and achieving success often results in satisfaction. However, for some men, that satisfaction dissipates in their 30s and 40s and they find that their success hasn’t resulted in the happiness they believed it would. They can feel as though something is missing from their life and begin searching for other sources of happiness. This can be a confusing and stressful time for men. Therapy is a place where men and unpack what they are experiencing and develop new strategies for addressing the situation.
